Fic: The Inescapable Charm of The Countdown [Part 2]
11th-Sep-2010 06:38 pm
Title: The Inescapable Charm of The Countdown
Rating: PG-13 (for language)
Characters/Pairings: Arthur/Eames, Cobb/Mal (plus Yusuf, Ariadne, Saito, and blink-and-you'll-miss-him Robert).
Spoilers/Warnings: Well, it follows the plot of the movie (with the character death that implies). But besides that? Nothing!
Summary: The worst thing about Eames, Arthur decides as he pulls his Thai leftovers from the office fridge the next day, is how infuriatingly competent he is. Arthur absolutely cannot fucking stand it. From the inception_kink prompt, "Arthur is a defense attorney, Eames is a prosecutor. (or, you know, the other way round. Whatever you think fits them best)." I did flip it around, for the record!
Disclaimer: Inception is absolutely not mine, nor is anything you recognize from it.
Notes: So, yes! This took much longer than I expected, and grew much wordier than I expected. About 30 pages wordier, to be exact. But it was wonderfully fun to write, and now here it is! Also, apologies for the legal inaccuracies. I know there are at least a few, and on that note, I will not be held responsible for anyone who uses this fic as their guide to navigating a court of law. ;]

James and Philippa come into the office with Cobb during the third week of March (Mal needs a break, Cobb says tightly), and on the whole they are remarkably well-behaved.Collapse )

oh, this is excellent - everyone is so perfectly characterized and I absolutely love the way you work the original Inception plot in. And Arthur and Eames' relationship is wonderful and still a little tense even when it's good, and when Arthur tries to distance himself it just becomes so painfully brittle and vulnerable that my heart broke a little. But the ending is lovely and happy even if their futures are uncertain!

Thank you very much! I'm glad you liked it, and thank you for leaving such a lovely comment. :]

This, this is so delightful and well-wrought and it has the characters in a completely foreign setting and yet remains so believable. I love stories about people and their careers and people being good at their careers, and this hits all my competency kinks. I adore it so, so much. (Also because one of my former fandoms used to be Phoenix Wright, which is all about a defense attorney and his very very homoerotic relations with a prosecutor, and aahhhh, fic of my heart. ♥

I loved the thing about they having actually a life before starting on the dream-business.
Great fic.

Loved this story ;) The way you spun the original story into this AU was sooo cool, especially that dreamsharing still exists...

This is completely amazing and I love it!

Holy wow!
That was smart and sweet and funny and fucking gut wrenching all at once.
Pretty much a perfect story. Thank you so much for sharing.

This was really neat!

And then they call up Ariadne because, hey, she's into architecture, and would she like to join them???

;D But seriously, I loved this, and I adored the way it made my heart ache and flutter all at the same time . . .

It's fantastic how you made this fit with the movie canon. I love Arthur and Eames' lunches, and Arthur slowly being pulled into illegality by the people he cares about, but in the end he still gets something wonderful out of it. Eames!!

Oh my god this is so beyond magnificent. I think your Eames is the best part of this fic. So much of his character shows through even though he really isn't around that much. This really deserves a much longer and more appreciative comment but it's one in the morning and all I can think is that thai food sounds really good right now (seriously, yum). I would totally leave the best comment ever if I was mentally capable at the moment.

'm going to go friend you now and then stalk you forever and ever. :D

How freaking awesome was this! Well, let me just tell you myself: Soooo freaking awesome. I love this AU and how Arthur and Eames stayed so Arthur and Eames. Good job with the side players too (lol at prosecutor Robert Fischer). I'm so glad I found this, despite how late I am.

Just wanted to let you know I've rec'ced your wonderful story on crack_van this month. You can read the rec here:

Thanks again for a delightful AU!

Oh my goodness, thank you so much! I get all gushy when people rec my stuff, so I'll try to spare you, but just. You said such nice things, ahhhhh. And Inception fandom is so full to the brim with talent that I'm psyched my story even occurred to you. I want to hug the entire post. And I feel like making it onto crack_van is probably some kind of rite of fannish passage, so thanks for that as well!

I was about to say that this (and_backagain) is me now, but I checked out the post and see that you know that, so. Never mind! I keep meaning to get rid of this journal entirely, but there's so much stuff I want to move/save that I am too laaaaaazy, haha.

Anyway! Sorry for the unnecessary rambling. I'm so glad you liked the story, and liked it enough to tell other people to read it, and just eeeeee, generally. Eeeeee! ♥

(Oh, and kudos to you for taking on Inception to rec, by the by. That is a Herculean task! I went over to see what else you'd suggested and there's a couple I haven't read, joy. :D)

This is lovely! I'm so sad there isn't more :/ I love how you managed to draw the story to the Inception world- perhaps this could be what happened pre-inception. Loved your Arthur and your Eames.

I don't have words to explain how much I love this story, so let's just say if you could open up house, and move into a story: i'd totally do it.
